Who I Am
I am passionate about leading worship and developing worship, design and production teams. Using music, media and technology in the creation of worship environments, I get excited about passionate biblical worship; the kind that invites the glory of God to transform lives.
Alison and I have been married since July 1998 after meeting in college. In northwest Iowa, I was 550 miles from ‘Sweet Home Chicago’ and she was almost double that distance from Goderich, Ontario, Canada. Years later, we’re the blessed parents of 4 boys (and a 5th, Jude, who we’ll see again in heaven). Miles (b. 2001), Oliver (b. 2004), Liam (b. 2005), and Graham (b. 2011) all bring such joy (and energy) to our lives.
I currently serve as Worship Pastor at Harvest Bible Chapel in West Olive, Michigan. The story of how I was offered this position in August of 2014 is nothing short of God’s leading and faithfulness to answer a longing in our hearts for a new ministry season.
Before moving to Michigan, I spent 14 years serving on pastoral staff at Victory Christian Center in Lafayette, Indiana. Prior to that, my education trajectory was moving in the direction of theatrical sound design and composition. In 1997 while pursuing an MFA at Purdue University, I felt God’s tug on my heart to pursue full-time ministry. What began as convincing my graduate committee to approve a 20hr/week ‘church’ internship, brought us to 2014 being an ordained pastor serving Victory as: Worship Pastor, Media and Production Coordinator, Assistant Pastor, and Director of ‘Advance’ Men’s Ministry. Weekly, I had been responsible to lead and develop our worship team, invest into student led worship teams, lead and staff all technical areas (production, design, I.T.), assist our lead pastors and direct the men’s ministry ‘Advance’.
In January of 2013, I began to experience a restlessness and stirring that a new season may be upon our family. (More HERE) Cautious to stay in God’s timing, I purposed to take a season to fast, pray, journal and seek God for clear direction. By July, we had experienced many confirmations from the Lord that led me to believe we would be concluding our season at Victory in the near future. Taking months to collaborate with Victory staff for a peaceful and effective transition, we announced in early January 2014 that I would conclude my assignment at Victory at the end of February 2014.
I’ve been writing worship music since high school, when I first began to follow Jesus. Now, I’m more passionate than ever about knowing Jesus more, serving the local church and writing songs that help people know the reality of His presence. Primarily a piano/keys player with a diverse background in rock, jazz, blues, gospel and various derivatives, I’m smitten by vintage keyboard instruments (CP-70′s, B3, Rhodes, Wurly, etc). I play electric bass as a secondary instrument, along with being “jack of all trades, master of none” on down the list.
With any given free time you’ll find me reading commentaries, blogs, and leadership books at a local coffee shop, mowing the lawn with a sermon podcast playing, writing worship music, playing an instrument, mountain biking, shooting/editing photography, visiting family in Chicago or Canada, cooking paleo meals, listening to a TED talk, remodeling our home, listening to Spotify, or wrestling on the floor with my 4 boys. Sometimes I also sleep.
